There have been a lot of articles in the press recently about whether employees ought to be able to work from home – recently appointed Yahoo! CEO & President Marissa Mayer controversially decided to put a stop to it, in order to improve productivity.  Meanwhile other high profile bosses like Richard Branson have criticised the move.

The ability to be productive working from home depends as much on the individual as it does on the task and the level of trust instilled by the employer.  Some companies that permit home working will monitor the employee’s mouse movements to ensure they are not away from their computer for prolonged periods.  There is much evidence to suggest that having a rigid list of tasks to complete and a deadline to work towards will result in much more productivity than a less structured list.

Many of us find that being at home doesn’t lend itself well to productivity – the association between home and relaxation is too overwhelming and we naturally work slower.  Still, plenty of people are able to thrive working from home – they just get their heads down as they would do had they been in the office, but without any of the distractions.

A happy medium is to spend a few days in the office and a few days at home – this way you are able to spend time engaging with colleagues, see how they work, attend meetings, and plan your home working so that you have deadlines in place.  Employees that have this flexibility experience the best of both worlds – no matter what Richard Branson thinks, there are definite benefits to working in a team environment including general camaraderie and empathy that you are not so much a part of as a home worker.  And similarly, being given the flexibility to work from home a couple of days a week demonstrates that your employer trusts you to work on your own devices.

C# ASP.NET Software developer – Ashby de la Zouch, Leicestershire.

Key skills

3 years + of the following:

  • C#
  • ASP.NET
  • Strong SQL skills including T-SQL, and practical experience of writing stored procedures, views and functions
  • Web & WinForms (75% WebForms work, 25% WinForms)
  • Experience of handling common data formats such as Excel, CSV, XML VB 6/2005/8/2010
  • Thorough understanding of data structures and extensive experience of performing data transformations & exporting data within a production environment
  • Commercial use of Javascript, JQuery, ASP, HTML, CSS

Desirable skills

  • Knowledge of Access 2002 including VBA, query, form and report writing ability
  • IOS Development, mobile phone application development, objective C,XCode
  • PHP
  • HTML5
  • XML
  • Flash/Actionscript
  • Exposure to a lab environment/LIMS solutions
  • Experience of working with Scrum/Agile methodology

The company

Our client is a dynamic growing business based in Ashby and this person will be part of a small close knit team working on development projects for an impressive customer base. They require a skilled developer with experience in C#, ASP.NET and very strong SQL skills. Any experience of LIMS would be a bonus.

Candidates should have the following characteristics:

  • Flexible to occasionally work outside hours to meet customer deadlines
  • Able to work unsupervised
  • Full driving license with ability and willingness to travel to customer sites as required

You can work from home for up to 2 days a week following successful completion of probationary period. Benefits include 25 days hol and contributory pension at 5%. A good basic salary is on offer, from £35,000 up to £45,000 depending on experience.
