Dad asks firms to dig deep to help Rainbows Hospice

THE father of a 12-year-old girl who can suffer up to 100 epileptic fits a day is urging people to support the hospice that helps care for her.

Matt Byrne talked to the Mail about his daughter Sophie and the vital work that Rainbows Hospice does to make her life that little bit more enjoyable.

The youngster, who lives in South Derbyshire and has been visiting Rainbows since 2005, was born with tuberous sclerosis complex, a genetic disease that causes non-cancerous growths to form in the brain and other organs.

She has two slow-growing, non-cancerous tumours in her brain which cannot be operated on.

It means that she has around 70 to 100 fits a day, is partially sighted, is in a wheelchair and unable to communicate.

Mr Byrne said: “Rainbows is an immensely important charity. I know this from personal experience because my daughter Sophie is a regular visitor there and I’ve seen the amazing work that they do at first hand.

It really is a lifeline for some families, and I know that there are many more children who need help than can currently be accommodated.”

Mr Byrne is a director at Blues Point, based in Anson Court, Burton, and he is now encouraging others to join the Loughborough-based children’s hospice business club.

The firm pays just £1 a day to be a member of the club and, in return for the donation, has its logo and link to its website on the business club page of the Rainbows website.

Mr Byrne added: “We joined the club because we wanted to show our support for Rainbows, and this scheme is a very easy way to make a regular donation.”

The plea comes as Rainbows is celebrating 20 years of care.

As part its its bid to commemorate its birthday, the charity wants to raise an extra £100,000 to help fund more children’s nurses.

Kate Golding, corporate fund-raiser at Rainbows, said: “I would like to thank Blues Point for supporting Rainbows.
“Their donation of £1 a day helps us to continue providing our expert care and specialist services.”
